Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) handed Republicans a campaign gift during a Thursday MSNBC appearance, openly admitting Democrats use racial gerrymandering to maintain power while simultaneously attacking GOP redistricting efforts as discriminatory.
The freshman congresswoman’s comments came during a segment about Louisiana’s congressional map, where she defended Democratic efforts to create majority-minority districts even as her party challenges Republican-drawn maps in court.
“We have to be honest about what redistricting is,” Crockett told host Joy Reid. “When we draw districts that ensure Black voters have a voice, that’s representation. When Republicans do it, that’s suppression.”
The statement crystalized what critics have long argued: Democrats apply different standards to redistricting based solely on which party benefits. Crockett went further, explaining that creating districts with predetermined racial outcomes is “necessary” because “we know how white people vote.”
Her remarks expose the tension at the heart of modern voting rights litigation. Democrats routinely sue states for racial gerrymandering when Republicans control the map-drawing process, arguing the Constitution requires race-neutral redistricting. But in states where Democrats hold power, they openly create districts specifically designed to concentrate minority voters—the textbook definition of racial gerrymandering.
The Supreme Court has wrestled with this double standard for decades. While the Voting Rights Act requires states to prevent discrimination, it doesn’t mandate the creation of majority-minority districts. Yet Democratic operatives treat such districts as sacrosanct while challenging any Republican map that considers race.
Crockett’s own district illustrates the issue. Texas’s 30th congressional district, which she represents, was drawn specifically to ensure a Black majority—exactly the type of racial line-drawing Democrats condemn when Republicans do it for different political outcomes.
The congresswoman’s candor may prove costly for Democrats fighting redistricting battles in federal court. Republicans can now cite a sitting Democratic member of Congress explaining, in her own words, that her party views racial gerrymandering as legitimate when it serves their interests.
The admission comes as several states prepare for the next round of redistricting following the 2030 census. With control of state legislatures split roughly evenly between parties, map-drawing fights will determine congressional power for the next decade.
Neither Crockett’s office nor the Democratic National Committee responded to requests for comment about her remarks. The MSNBC segment has been shared widely on social media, with Republican operatives calling it a rare moment of honesty about Democratic strategy.
Key Points
- Crockett openly defended creating majority-minority districts while attacking Republican redistricting as discriminatory, applying different standards based on partisan outcome
- Her comments expose Democrats’ simultaneous use of racial gerrymandering in states they control while suing to stop it in Republican-led states
- The admission could prove damaging in ongoing federal court cases where Democrats argue race-based redistricting violates the Constitution
