DOT Mandates Meditation Before Driving

WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation announced Friday a new pilot program requiring all drivers to complete a mandatory 15-minute meditation session before starting their vehicles, citing studies that show “calm drivers are compliant drivers.”

The “Mindful Motors Initiative” will begin in select cities including Portland, Berkeley, and Austin before expanding nationwide by 2027. Vehicles manufactured after January 2027 will be equipped with federally mandated “Zen Ignition Systems” that use facial recognition technology to verify the driver has achieved a “sufficiently peaceful state” before the engine will start.

Transportation Secretary Amanda Chen defended the program at a press conference, explaining that road rage and aggressive driving stem from “a lack of inner harmony with the vehicle-driver relationship.” The system will require drivers to complete breathing exercises while maintaining eye contact with the dashboard camera, which uses AI to measure “stress indicators” including furrowed brows and clenched jaws.

Drivers who fail the meditation check three times will be required to attend a weekend retreat focusing on “automotive mindfulness” and their relationship with fossil fuels. The $850 course, provided by approved contractors, includes sessions on “Apologizing to Your Catalytic Converter” and “Visualizing Your Carbon Footprint as a Healing Journey.”

Critics have raised concerns about emergency situations, but the DOT clarified that paramedics and firefighters will still need to meditate, just for a reduced 8-minute period. “Even first responders benefit from centering themselves,” Chen noted. “A calm EMT is a better EMT.”

The program has received praise from the National Association of Wellness Consultants, whose members will staff the mandatory retreat centers. Early testing in Burlington, Vermont showed promising results, with 73% of drivers either achieving inner peace or giving up and taking the bus instead.

The initiative is funded through a new $2.50 surcharge on all gasoline purchases, officially titled the “Contemplative Commuter Fee.”
