Fed’s Williams Sees No Rate Hikes After 2026

The New York Federal Reserve’s president said Tuesday he expects just one more interest rate hike this year, then no more through 2027—a sharp contrast with Wall Street traders betting on multiple increases that could squeeze borrowers and savers alike.

John Williams told Bloomberg News he hasn’t changed his view that “it may be appropriate to have one more rate hike” in the coming months. But beyond that single increase, he said, “I don’t think at this time I have any reason to believe that we would need to do more.”

Markets Price In Higher Rates Ahead

Williams’ forecast puts him at odds with futures traders, who are pricing in significantly more Fed action. According to CME’s FedWatch data, markets are assigning roughly 90% odds that the Fed’s benchmark rate will end 2027 at least half a percentage point higher than current levels—meaning at least two quarter-point hikes beyond the one Williams expects this year.

That disconnect matters for Americans carrying mortgages, auto loans, or credit card balances. Higher rates mean steeper borrowing costs. For savers, higher rates could eventually boost returns on certificates of deposit and savings accounts, though banks have been slow to pass along previous Fed increases.

Split Views Within the Fed Itself

Williams isn’t alone among Fed officials in his cautious stance, but he’s in the minority. Of the 18 Federal Open Market Committee members who submitted rate forecasts for 2027, eight project one more hike after this year’s expected increase. That means ten officials—a majority—see either no additional hikes or potentially more aggressive tightening.

As president of the New York Fed, Williams holds a permanent vote on the FOMC, the committee that sets interest rates at each policy meeting. That gives his voice extra weight, even when markets disagree.

The Fed raised rates in September for the first time since 2023, resuming its battle against inflation after a nearly three-year pause. The central bank has been trying to thread the needle between cooling price growth without triggering a recession—a balancing act that affects everything from job security to retirement account values.

What Comes Next

The Fed’s next policy meeting will reveal whether Williams’ moderate view or the market’s more aggressive forecast proves accurate. For households, the difference could mean hundreds of dollars in annual interest payments—or gains—depending on which side of the borrowing-versus-saving ledger they fall.

Key Points

  • NY Fed President Williams forecasts one final rate hike this year, then none through 2027
  • Wall Street traders price in 90% odds of at least two more hikes by end of 2027
  • Ten of 18 Fed officials see different path than Williams, creating uncertainty for borrowers and savers
