Maine Democrat Battles Party Over Replacement

Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner faces mounting pressure to abandon his challenge to Sen. Susan Collins after a woman he dated accused him of sexual assault five years ago. The allegation has thrown the race into chaos with just days remaining for Platner to withdraw and Democrats scrambling over who would replace him on the ballot.

Platner has until July 13 to exit the race. If he does, Maine’s Democratic Party committee would have until July 27 to select a replacement candidate. But questions are swirling about whether Platner wants to control that choice—and whether party leaders will let him.

Platner Team Denies Replacement Demands

The New York Times reported that a source close to the campaign said Platner would only step aside “with a guarantee of being replaced by a candidate who he believes is true to the values and vision and policy agenda of the campaign that Maine voted for.” That language suggests Platner wants veto power over his successor.

Rebecca Katz, who works for the consulting firm advising Platner’s campaign, called those claims “false.” But she didn’t elaborate on what conditions, if any, Platner might be setting for his withdrawal.

Party Leaders Chart Their Own Course

In a memo to state committee members obtained by the Bangor Daily News, Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson called the situation “unprecedented” and said party leadership has been working through the complications. The memo suggests Democratic officials may be preparing to move forward with their own replacement process regardless of Platner’s preferences.

The woman who came forward said Platner assaulted her while drunk during their relationship. Democrats at both state and national levels have called for him to withdraw immediately, viewing the allegation as disqualifying and the potential Senate seat as too important to risk.

Collins, a Republican moderate who has held the seat since 1997, remains the favorite in the race. A viable Democratic challenger would need name recognition and fundraising capability with just four months until November—making the replacement decision critical for a party that sees few realistic pickup opportunities this cycle.
