Biden Admin Mandates Fridge Registration for All Americans

WASHINGTON — The Department of Energy announced Friday a sweeping new initiative requiring all American households to register their refrigerators with the federal government by December 31st or face potential penalties of up to $500.

The National Refrigerator Efficiency and Disclosure Act (NREDA), passed quietly as part of a 2,847-page omnibus spending bill in March, mandates that citizens provide detailed specifications of their cooling appliances, including age, energy rating, interior temperature settings, and monthly ice production estimates.

“For too long, refrigerators have operated in the shadows of American kitchens with zero federal oversight,” said Deputy Energy Secretary Marcus Feldman at a press conference. “We have absolutely no idea how many refrigerators are out there, what they’re cooling, or whether citizens are operating secondary garage refrigerators without proper authorization.”

The registration process, accessible only through the new FridgeTrack.gov portal, requires uploading photos of the appliance’s energy label, a sworn affidavit regarding the typical contents stored inside, and a $45 processing fee. Households with more than one refrigerator must pay an additional $75 “Multi-Unit Cooling Device Surcharge.”

Early rollout has faced technical difficulties, with the FridgeTrack website crashing within hours of launch. Users who successfully logged in reported being prompted to create security questions including “What year did you purchase your first ice cube tray?” and “In what city was your refrigerator manufactured?”

The DOE emphasized that refrigerator inspectors would not conduct warrantless home searches, but reserved the right to audit appliances “if credible intelligence suggests non-compliant cooling activity.” A new hotline (1-888-COLD-TIP) allows neighbors to report suspected unregistered refrigerators.

Exemptions apply only to Amish households and individuals living entirely off-grid who can prove they cool their milk using a stream or root cellar approved by the Bureau of Traditional Refrigeration Alternatives.
