Used electric vehicles cost 12% more than they did a month ago as the Iran conflict and soaring gasoline prices push American families toward battery-powered cars, according to wholesale auction data released Wednesday.
Cox Automotive’s Manheim index, which tracks vehicles sold at U.S. wholesale auctions, shows used EV prices jumped 12% in June compared to May 2026. Gas-powered vehicles rose just 1.7% over the same period.
The shift marks a reversal for the used EV market, which spent two years seeing prices fall as early adopters discovered battery degradation issues and limited charging infrastructure outside major cities.
Wholesale Prices Signal Higher Costs Ahead
Wholesale EV prices have climbed every month this year, pushing the average to $30,400—an 11.5% increase since January. Traditional vehicles averaged $19,125, up less than 1% for the year.
Those wholesale numbers typically flow to retail lots within weeks. Kelley Blue Book, also owned by Cox, reported average used EV listing prices at $37,083 in May, before the most recent spike.
The price surge comes as regular unleaded gasoline hit $4.89 per gallon nationally last week, the highest since the summer of 2022. The Iran conflict has disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, with benchmark crude trading above $95 per barrel.
Tesla Dominates Growing Market Share
Used EV sales reached 42,923 units in May, up 24.7% from May 2025. Tesla models accounted for 15,353 of those sales, maintaining the company’s dominance even in the secondhand market.
EVs now represent 2.8% of all used vehicle sales, a small but growing slice as families calculate the math on fuel savings versus higher sticker prices.
Manheim noted that traditional SUV and pickup truck prices are “faltering” compared to last year, suggesting buyers are rethinking large gas-powered vehicles as pump prices climb.
The trend presents a choice for families considering a used vehicle purchase: pay more upfront for an EV and save on fuel, or stick with cheaper gas-powered options while absorbing higher costs at the pump. With no clear end to Middle East tensions, that calculation may tilt further toward electric in coming months.
