Graham Dies at 71, GOP Scrambles to Replace

Sen. Lindsey Graham died July 11 after what his office called a “brief and sudden illness,” leaving South Carolina’s Republican Party scrambling to fill a Senate seat that has been in GOP hands for decades. Graham was 71.

Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, as a temporary replacement to hold the seat until Jan. 3, 2027. A special primary is set for Aug. 1 to determine who will carry the Republican banner in November’s midterm election.

From Trump Critic to Loyal Ally

Graham’s political career spanned nearly three decades in Congress—eight years in the House starting in 1995, then 24 years in the Senate after his 2002 election. He made his name as a foreign policy hawk alongside the late Arizona Sen. John McCain, who ran for president in 2008.

But Graham’s legacy will be defined by one of the most dramatic political reversals in modern Washington. He ran against Donald Trump for the 2016 Republican nomination, and their fight got ugly. Even after dropping out, Graham spent months attacking the future president in harsh terms.

Once Trump took office, Graham turned into one of his fiercest defenders. That loyalty only deepened when Trump returned to the White House this year. Graham became what some called Trump’s “Senate whisperer”—the administration’s go-to ally for navigating thin congressional majorities.

Trump Loses Key Capitol Hill Navigator

Graham’s death leaves the Trump administration without its most reliable Senate voice at a critical moment. With narrow majorities in both chambers, passing legislation requires careful vote-counting and relationship management—skills Graham had refined over decades in the Capitol.

Graham is the seventh sitting senator to die in the past 20 years, according to the Senate Historical Office. He’s among 303 senators who have died in office throughout American history.

The Aug. 1 primary will determine which Republican takes Graham’s spot on the Nov. 3 ballot. With South Carolina’s deep Republican advantage, the GOP nominee will be heavily favored in the general election. Whoever wins will serve the remainder of Graham’s term, which runs through January 2027, when the seat comes up for a full six-year election.
