The Army committed up to $2.2 billion Wednesday to build nuclear microreactors at five military bases, the largest federal investment yet in a technology that could reshape America’s energy future while strengthening national defense.

Military Bases as Nuclear Testing Grounds

Microreactors generate between 1 and 20 megawatts of power—enough to run a small military installation or rural town—and can operate for years without refueling. Unlike traditional nuclear plants that take a decade to build, these units are designed for factory production and rapid deployment.

The military deployment solves a chicken-and-egg problem that has stalled nuclear innovation: private utilities won’t invest in unproven technology, but manufacturers can’t prove their designs without customers. By committing billions in guaranteed contracts, the Pentagon creates a path for these reactors to reach commercial markets.

For bases in remote locations or hostile territory, the technology means energy independence. No fuel convoys to ambush. No power lines to cut. Just years of reliable electricity from a unit the size of a shipping container.

What It Means for American Energy

If the military reactors succeed, the same technology could power American factories, data centers, and small towns without the massive infrastructure of conventional power plants.
