Rapper’s Assistant: Lil Durk Celebrated Killing

A former assistant to Grammy-winning rapper Lil Durk testified in federal court Tuesday that when the Chicago artist learned a 2022 shooting had killed a young man in Los Angeles, he said: “Finally, we got somebody.”

The testimony came from Kavon Grant, who worked as Durk Banks’s personal assistant and self-described “right hand man” for several years. Banks, who performs as Lil Durk, faces federal murder-for-hire charges in connection with the August 2022 shooting outside a West Hollywood gas station that killed 24-year-old Lul Pab, cousin of rival rapper Quando Rondo.

Three masked shooters sprayed Rondo’s vehicle with bullets but missed their intended target, striking Pab instead. Prosecutors say the attack was retaliation for the 2020 murder of King Von, a close friend of Banks who died during a confrontation involving Rondo.

The Prosecution’s Theory of the Case

Federal prosecutors contend Banks and members of OTF — which functions as both a record label and what authorities describe as a criminal street gang — felt duty-bound to avenge King Von’s death. The government points to Banks’s own lyrics as evidence of intent, including one song where he rapped: “If you can’t get the main n—a then you better get his guy.”

“That’s what you did in LA, right?” Assistant U.S. Attorney Ian Yanniello asked Grant during questioning.

The case hinges on whether Banks ordered or financed the hit, or whether he was simply aware of actions taken by associates. Banks has denied involvement and sought to shift blame to Grant and other OTF members.

What Happens Next

Grant’s testimony represents a significant moment in the trial, as former insiders rarely testify against high-profile defendants in federal gang prosecutions. His credibility will likely become a central battleground as the defense cross-examines him in coming days.

The trial continues in Los Angeles federal court. Banks faces life in prison if convicted on all counts.
