WASHINGTON — The Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday that all Americans will be required to complete a mandatory 45-minute “gratitude meditation” each morning before accessing the internet, with compliance tracked through existing smart home devices and browser cookies.
The new Mental Wellness Accountability Act, which passed the Senate 51-49 along party lines at 3 a.m. last Thursday, establishes a federal framework for ensuring citizens begin each day with “appropriate mindfulness and thankfulness for their government’s tireless service.”
Under the program, internet service providers will automatically block all web traffic between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. until users complete the guided meditation, which will be delivered through a new government app called “MindfulGov.” The meditation includes affirmations such as “I am grateful for regulatory agencies” and “I trust the experts who know better than I do.”
Secretary of Health and Human Services Dr. Patricia Williamson defended the program at a press conference, explaining that “preliminary studies show Americans are experiencing dangerous levels of independent thought and morning cortisol spikes from reading news before proper centering.”
The program will be enforced through partnerships with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple devices, which will detect whether users have completed their meditation through voice recognition and biometric monitoring. Repeat offenders will face escalating penalties, beginning with a written warning and progressing to mandatory weekend wellness retreats at designated federal facilities.
Republican lawmakers have raised concerns about the $47 billion price tag and potential privacy implications. Democratic sponsors countered that the program is fully funded through a new 12% tax on coffee, energy drinks, and “other morning stimulants that prevent Americans from achieving natural calm.”
The app will launch in beta testing next month in Portland, Seattle, and Burlington, Vermont, with nationwide rollout scheduled for January 2027. Users will be able to track their “gratitude score” and compete with neighbors on a public leaderboard.
