The strait is the world’s most critical oil chokepoint, with roughly one-fifth of global petroleum passing through the narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.
U.S. Central Command said American forces took “limited, precise action against the IRGC minelaying forces posing an imminent threat in the Strait of Hormuz.” The military detected Iranian forces readying mines that could block commercial shipping and threaten U.S. naval vessels patrolling the region.
