Army Shuts Down Elite Information Warfare Unit

The Army shut down the 8th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) in a ceremony at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, on September 29, marking the end of a specialized unit that played a key role in America’s information warfare capabilities.

Col. Robert Cusick, the group’s commanding officer, presided over the inactivation. “I could not be prouder of the men and women that stand before us today and those that came before us to inactivate the unit,” Cusick said during the ceremony. “8th PSYOP Group introduced new concepts that will remain for years to come.”

What Psychological Operations Units Do

Psychological operations units conduct influence campaigns to shape foreign audiences’ perceptions and behavior in support of U.S. military objectives. These airborne-qualified soldiers deploy worldwide to counter enemy propaganda, support allied governments, and undermine adversary morale.

The 8th PSYOP Group was one of several such units under the Army’s Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command. These forces have become increasingly important as adversaries like China and Russia wage sophisticated information campaigns against American interests.

Reorganization Amid Growing Threats

The Army has not publicly detailed why it inactivated the unit or whether its missions will transfer to other psychological operations groups. Military reorganizations typically aim to eliminate redundancy or reallocate resources to higher-priority threats.

The timing comes as the Pentagon faces pressure to modernize its approach to information warfare while adversaries expand their own capabilities. Russia’s use of disinformation during conflicts and China’s global influence operations have demonstrated the stakes of failing to counter hostile narratives.

Graduates of the Army’s PSYOP training receive specialized instruction at Fort Hunter Liggett, California, before joining operational units. The demanding selection process ensures only the most capable soldiers fill these sensitive positions.

The Army has not announced plans to stand up replacement units or whether the 8th Group’s inactivation reflects a broader restructuring of psychological operations forces.
