A Georgia man will spend the next 40 years in prison after he lured a housecleaner to his home, stabbed her in the eye with a screwdriver, and held her captive for hours in what prosecutors called a premeditated attack on a vulnerable worker.
Jonathan Wallace, 35, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and false imprisonment in Cherokee County Superior Court. The sentencing closes a case that exposed the risks facing women who work alone in clients’ homes — often without background checks or safety protocols to protect them.
The victim, whose name has not been released, responded to Wallace’s request for cleaning services in 2024. When she arrived at his residence, Wallace attacked her without warning, stabbing her directly in the eye with a screwdriver before imprisoning her inside the home. The assault left her with permanent vision damage.
Prosecutors said Wallace specifically targeted the woman because she was working alone and appeared vulnerable. He had no prior relationship with her and hired her through a service platform that connected independent contractors with homeowners seeking domestic help.
The victim eventually escaped and contacted law enforcement. Wallace was arrested shortly after at the scene. Evidence presented during plea negotiations showed the attack was planned rather than spontaneous, leading to enhanced charges.
Cherokee County District Attorney Susan Treadaway said the case highlighted dangers facing gig economy workers who enter strangers’ homes without institutional safeguards. Many independent housecleaners lack the vetting systems, emergency check-ins, or liability coverage that traditional cleaning companies provide their employees.
The 40-year sentence requires Wallace to serve at least 85 percent before becoming eligible for parole consideration, meaning he will remain incarcerated until at least 2058. He must also register as a violent offender upon release and will face lifetime probation restrictions.
The victim provided a statement to the court detailing the lasting physical and psychological trauma from the attack. She has undergone multiple surgeries to address the eye injury but will never fully regain vision in the damaged eye.
Defense attorneys did not dispute the facts but sought a lighter sentence based on Wallace’s lack of serious prior criminal history. The judge rejected that argument, noting the deliberate nature of the crime and the defendant’s targeting of a woman he knew would be alone and defenseless.
