Department of Education Mandates Daily “Emotional Check-In” App Before Students Can Enter Classroom

WASHINGTON — The Department of Education announced Thursday a sweeping new initiative requiring all public school students to complete a federally standardized “Emotional Check-In” via smartphone app before being permitted to enter the classroom each morning.

The program, dubbed “MindSafe Morning Protocol,” will require students ages 5-18 to answer a series of questions about their feelings, home environment, and “privilege awareness” on a government-issued device. Students who fail to complete the check-in, or whose answers trigger algorithmic red flags, will be held in a designated “Processing Room” until a wellness coordinator can assess their fitness for learning.

“We can no longer allow children to simply show up and learn,” said Education Secretary Dr. Bethany Whitmore at a press conference. “Research shows that unchecked emotions and unexamined biases create unsafe learning environments. This app will ensure every student is emotionally compliant before entering shared spaces.”

The app includes questions such as “Did anyone in your household express a political opinion last night?” and “On a scale of 1-10, how aware are you of your identity markers today?” Students must also complete a brief meditation module and watch a 90-second video about “centering marginalized voices.”

Parents who attempt to help their children complete the check-in will face penalties, as the program requires “authentic, uncoached responses.” The Department has contracted with a Silicon Valley firm to develop AI monitoring that can detect when an adult is in the room during check-in completion.

Schools that fail to achieve a 95% daily check-in compliance rate will lose federal funding. The program is expected to cost $43 billion over three years, with additional funding allocated for the estimated 12,000 new wellness coordinators who will need to be hired nationwide.

The app launches nationwide on September 1st, with mandatory teacher training beginning in July.
