Audi unveiled its largest SUV ever Tuesday, a three-row Q9 aimed squarely at American families willing to spend close to six figures on a vehicle with eight-cylinder power and cupholders big enough for gas station sodas.
The German automaker priced the Q9 at $89,095 and a high-performance SQ9 variant at $119,395, putting both models in direct competition with Cadillac Escalades, Lincoln Navigators, and BMW’s X7 in one of the most profitable corners of the U.S. auto market.
Third New SUV This Year Targeting American Buyers
The Q9 represents Audi’s most direct play yet for American customers after several quarters of disappointing U.S. sales. The brand has already introduced two other SUVs this year — the compact Q3 in March and midsize Q7 in June — betting that Americans’ appetite for large vehicles will override concerns about premium pricing.
“If you look at our recent introductions, whether it is the Q3, whether it is this car, it really plays right into the center of what’s happening in America,” said Filip Brabec, Audi of America senior vice president of product management, at the New York reveal. “SUVs keep growing. It’s over 80% of the premium space.”
Six and Eight Cylinders When Competitors Go Electric
Audi designed the Q9 specifically for American preferences, Brabec said, including offering six and eight-cylinder engines at a time when many luxury brands are pushing electric or four-cylinder turbocharged options. The consideration extended to interior details like oversized cupholders — a feature American buyers consistently demand.
“It represents the most lavish luxury car that we have in this space,” Brabec said.
The Q9 and SQ9 will serve as Audi’s U.S. flagship models, a designation the brand has never before given to a vehicle with this nameplate. Whether American families will pay Escalade money for a German three-row in an increasingly crowded field remains the question Audi needs answered to reverse its recent sales slide.
