Honda: 50% Canada Tariffs Mean Disaster

American automakers and their suppliers face potential collapse if President Trump follows through on threats to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles and parts by January 1, a top Honda executive warned Tuesday.

Jennifer Thomas, senior vice president at American Honda Motor Co., called the scenario “catastrophic for the entire industry” during a Reuters automotive conference in Detroit. The warning comes as Trump demands Canada reach a new bilateral trade deal or watch tariffs double from their current 25% level in just over two months.

Why This Threatens American Car Buyers

The automotive supply chain stretches across North American borders, with parts crossing between countries multiple times during manufacturing. A 50% tariff would force those costs onto consumers already stretched thin by inflation. Thomas and other industry leaders say the practical result would be shuttered plants, lost American jobs, and vehicle prices climbing thousands of dollars higher.

Every major U.S. automotive trade group opposes Trump’s approach. They’re pushing instead for a comprehensive trilateral deal that would include Mexico—essentially maintaining the framework of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that Trump himself negotiated to replace NAFTA.

Trump Scraps His Own Trade Deal

The crisis stems from U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer’s decision earlier this year to abandon automatic extension of USMCA. Instead of the planned 16-year renewal, Greer moved the agreement into annual reviews—opening the door for Trump to extract new concessions or impose tariffs.

Industry executives worry the bilateral approach creates uncertainty that will drive investment overseas. Companies need long-term stability to plan billion-dollar factory investments. Annual negotiations make that impossible.

What Happens Next

Canada and the U.S. have ten weeks to reach a deal before the January 1 deadline. No formal negotiations have been announced. If talks fail and tariffs hit 50%, expect immediate price increases on popular trucks and SUVs that middle-class families depend on. Dealers may also face shortages as manufacturers slow production rather than absorb crushing costs.

The threat affects everyone from Ford assembly workers in Michigan to parts suppliers in Tennessee to families shopping for reliable transportation. Thomas’s plea for a trilateral deal reflects industry consensus that Trump’s hardball tactics risk breaking a system that, however imperfect, keeps American auto manufacturing competitive.
