The Department of Transportation announced Monday it will require all highway rest stops to install “Mindfulness Meditation Pods” by January 2027, citing new research that shows Americans are “dangerously relaxed” during road trips.
Transportation Secretary Margaret Chen unveiled the $4.2 billion initiative at a press conference, explaining that federal highway data reveals travelers are spending an average of 3.7 minutes per rest stop visit without engaging in any structured wellness activities.
“We can no longer afford to let Americans simply use the bathroom, grab a coffee, and get back on the road,” Chen said. “Every rest stop interaction is an opportunity for government-facilitated personal growth.”
The mandatory meditation pods—described as “coffin-sized wellness chambers”—will feature guided breathing exercises narrated by various celebrities who have endorsed the current administration. Travelers must complete a minimum five-minute session before receiving a QR code that unlocks the restroom facilities.
Each pod will be equipped with biometric sensors to ensure users are “authentically relaxing” rather than simply sitting in silence. Travelers who show elevated stress levels will be required to repeat the meditation session until their cortisol readings meet federal standards.
The program has drawn criticism from trucking associations, who argue the mandatory sessions will add significant time to cross-country routes. The DOT dismissed these concerns, noting that the pods will also collect valuable data on American wellness patterns to inform future transportation policy.
Rest stops that fail to install the meditation pods by the deadline will lose federal highway funding. The DOT estimates each pod will cost approximately $47,000 to install and $12,000 annually to maintain, with costs passed along to state transportation budgets.
A beta test program launched in three California rest stops last month, where average visit times increased from four minutes to twenty-three minutes. Officials called the results “encouraging.”
