$20 Billion in Canadian Tariffs Take Effect Tuesday
The Bombardier threat lands one day before Canada implements roughly $20 billion in retaliatory tariffs on more than 700 American products. Ottawa announced the measures August 25th, designed to match the scale of Trump’s 50% tariffs on Canadian wine, cement, hockey sticks and other goods.
Those American tariffs followed what Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick described as a breakdown in near-complete trade negotiations. Lutnick told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that Canadian officials “blew up” a substantially finished deal “for political reasons only.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded that his government would resume talks “when the Americans are ready.”
