GOP Voters Split on Iran Reconstruction Plan

Nearly half of Republican voters oppose a central piece of President Trump’s plan to end the war with Iran — a $300 billion reconstruction fund that would flow to Tehran after hostilities cease, according to a new Economist-YouGov poll released Tuesday.

Forty-eight percent of Republicans say the United States should not provide Iran with the massive reconstruction package, while just 23 percent support it and 29 percent remain unsure. Democrats mirror that skepticism almost exactly, suggesting rare bipartisan doubt about the president’s signature diplomatic initiative.

Trump Insists Gulf States Will Pay

The White House has repeatedly emphasized that American taxpayer dollars would not fund the reconstruction effort. Trump maintains that Gulf States will front the $300 billion, though details won’t be finalized until after a 60-day negotiating period outlined in the administration’s memorandum of understanding with Tehran.

That distinction appears lost on voters, or insufficient to win their backing. The poll suggests Americans across party lines remain wary of any financial commitment tied to Iran, regardless of who cuts the checks.

Mixed Republican Response to Iran Deal Elements

Other components of Trump’s Iran framework draw warmer reception from GOP voters. Forty percent of Republicans support unfreezing Iranian assets and granting sanctions waivers that would allow Tehran to sell oil on global markets — a figure that climbs slightly to 42 percent among Democrats.

Republicans strongly back opening the Strait of Hormuz toll-free for 60 days while negotiations continue, and overwhelming majorities want the U.S. to negotiate disposal of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile.

The poll arrives as the Senate handed Trump a symbolic rebuke Tuesday, passing a resolution demanding an end to the war. The results underscore the delicate politics facing the administration as it tries to sell a deal that promises peace but requires Americans to stomach financial commitments to a longtime adversary — even if those commitments come from allies’ coffers, not their own.

Key Points

  • 48% of Republicans oppose $300 billion Iran reconstruction fund, with only 23% in support
  • Trump says Gulf States will finance the package, but voter skepticism remains bipartisan
  • Republicans show stronger support for other deal elements including unfreezing assets and opening Strait of Hormuz
