DOE Mandates Remote Federal Control of Home Thermostats

WASHINGTON — The Department of Energy announced Tuesday that all American households will be required to install federally certified “smart thermostats” by January 2027, with remote temperature controls managed by a new Climate Equity Compliance Bureau to ensure no family uses “disproportionate heating resources.”

The thermostats, which cannot be manually overridden, will set each home’s temperature based on a complex algorithm factoring in household income, square footage, regional climate data, and the homeowner’s calculated “thermal privilege score.” Wealthier households will be capped at 64 degrees in winter, while lower-income families may heat up to 68 degrees to “correct historical disparities in comfort access.”

Energy Secretary Maria Kowalski defended the program at a press conference held in a conference room set to a crisp 58 degrees. “For too long, Americans have operated under the mistaken belief that they have an unlimited right to warmth,” Kowalski said, her breath visible in the cold air. “This initiative ensures that heating justice becomes heating reality.”

The thermostats will also feature “dynamic pricing adjustments” that increase electricity costs by 400% if residents attempt to heat their homes during designated “peak privilege hours” between 5 PM and 9 PM on weekdays. Families may apply for heating variances if they can prove medical necessity, though the application requires a minimum of seven weeks processing time and notarized statements from three licensed physicians.

Installation of the devices will be mandatory, with noncompliance resulting in fines starting at $5,000 and potential disconnection of all home utilities. The Bureau will employ approximately 12,000 new “Thermal Compliance Officers” who will conduct random home inspections to ensure no residents have tampered with their units or are using unauthorized space heaters.

When asked whether government buildings would be subject to the same temperature restrictions, Kowalski noted that federal facilities require “operational flexibility” and would be exempt from the program.
