A Utah man faces attempted murder charges after stabbing a Muslim mall employee multiple times in what prosecutors are calling a religiously motivated hate crime at a West Valley City shopping center.
Peter Michael Larsen, 48, of Taylorsville is charged with two counts of first-degree felony attempted aggravated murder and one count of third-degree felony prohibited dangerous weapon conduct, the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s office announced Friday. The July 13 attack at Valley Fair Mall left the victim, identified in media reports only as Sohail, with stab wounds to his head, neck, chest, arm and hand.
The Attack at the Mall Kiosk
According to a probable cause declaration written by a police detective, Larsen approached Sohail at his mall kiosk and first asked for water. The conversation turned to where Sohail was from—he told Larsen he was from India. When Larsen asked if he was Muslim and Sohail confirmed, Larsen reportedly said “Everything is like Jesus Christ” and began stabbing him.
Witnesses described the weapon as a 4-inch blade attached to brass knuckles. The combination weapon explains the prohibited dangerous weapon charge alongside the attempted murder counts.
What Happens Next in the Case
The charges represent some of the most serious in Utah’s criminal code. First-degree felony attempted aggravated murder carries a potential sentence of 15 years to life in prison. If prosecutors prove religious animus motivated the attack, sentencing guidelines could be enhanced under hate crime statutes.
Larsen remains in custody. The case will proceed through Salt Lake County courts, where prosecutors will need to prove both the physical attack and the religious motivation behind it. The victim’s survival and ability to provide testimony about the conversation preceding the attack strengthens the prosecution’s case on intent.
The charges come as religious hate crimes have drawn increased scrutiny nationwide, though prosecution rates remain inconsistent across jurisdictions.
