Talarico Runs From Progressive Past in Texas

Texas Democrat James Talarico is backpedaling from his progressive past as Republicans hammer him with his own words in the state’s U.S. Senate race. The former state representative who built a national following by invoking scripture to defend left-wing causes now admits he has “regrets” about statements he made during what critics call the “Peak Woke” era of 2019-2020.

Talarico faces Republican Ken Paxton, the state’s attorney general who defeated 24-year incumbent John Cornyn in the GOP primary. The Nov. 3 election comes in a state President Donald Trump carried by 14 points in 2024, forcing Talarico to explain years of viral social media posts that delighted progressives but may alienate the broader Texas electorate.

The Walk-Back That Raised More Questions

In a recent CBS News interview, Talarico stopped defending his record and started apologizing for it. “There are some statements that I’ve made that I certainly regret,” he said. “There are statements that I’ve made where I’ve missed the mark. I’ll be the first to admit that.”

The admission marks a sharp reversal for a politician who spent nearly eight years in the Texas House building his brand around progressive causes wrapped in religious language. Those positions played well in his Austin-area district and earned him a national progressive following, but now threaten his statewide prospects in deep-red Texas.

Peak Woke Comes Home to Roost

Republicans are weaponizing Talarico’s commentary from 2019-2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic and George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis police custody pushed social justice activism to the forefront of Democratic politics. During that period, Talarico’s progressive statements on social media went viral, cementing his reputation among the party’s left wing.

But what worked for a state representative in a liberal district creates problems for a Senate candidate who needs votes across Texas. The Paxton campaign has made Talarico’s past statements a centerpiece of its strategy, forcing the Democrat to choose between defending positions that excite his base or moderating to compete statewide.

November Test in Trump Country

Talarico’s frantic pivot toward the center highlights the challenge facing Democrats in red states where Trump’s 2024 performance demonstrated continued conservative strength. Texas voters will decide whether they believe Talarico’s evolution is genuine or simply campaign-season repositioning from a politician who said what he meant the first time.
