The Department of Transportation announced Friday that all federally funded highways will be required to include dedicated “Electric Vehicle Charging Meditation Zones” every fifteen miles, effective January 2027.
The new regulation, part of the Infrastructure Equity and Mindfulness Act, mandates that each charging station be surrounded by a minimum 400-square-foot “contemplation area” featuring native grasses, a small water feature, and ambient sounds calibrated to promote “charging consciousness.”
Transportation Secretary Michael Rodriguez explained that the program addresses what he called “range anxiety’s psychological toll on the American psyche.” The zones will offer complimentary herbal tea, weighted blankets, and federally certified Charging Wellness Coaches available via video call 24/7.
“We’ve heard from EV drivers that waiting 45 minutes for a charge creates stress,” Rodriguez said at a press conference. “This is unacceptable. Every American has the right to transform their charging experience into a journey of self-discovery.”
The program’s $8.7 billion budget includes grants for states to hire “Chief Charging Experience Officers” and construction of over 12,000 meditation pavilions. Each pavilion must include yoga mats, affirmation cards in seventeen languages, and a “gratitude wall” where drivers can post notes thanking their vehicle for its service.
Gas station owners have filed preliminary complaints, noting their facilities will not receive comparable funding. A DOT spokesperson clarified that traditional fuel stations “represent old paradigms of instant gratification” and therefore don’t qualify for wellness infrastructure support.
The regulations also require charging stations to eliminate all time estimates for charging completion, as officials determined that “watching the clock contradicts the mindful charging philosophy.” Instead, screens will display inspirational quotes and gentle animations of growing plants.
Republican Senator Tom Bradshaw called the program “insane,” while Democratic Senator Patricia Mills praised it as “long overdue recognition that infrastructure is emotional infrastructure.”
The first pilot location opens in October outside Boulder, Colorado.
