DOE Orders Fans Spin Counterclockwise to Save Planet

The Department of Energy announced Tuesday that all residential ceiling fans manufactured after January 1, 2027 must rotate counterclockwise year-round to “harmonize with Earth’s rotational direction” and reduce what officials are calling “angular momentum debt.”

The new regulation, spanning 847 pages, establishes that clockwise fan rotation creates “micro-atmospheric resistance patterns” that cumulatively slow planetary rotation by an estimated 0.000000003 seconds per century, according to a DOE-commissioned study by the Institute for Sustainable Rotation Policy.

“For too long, American households have operated ceiling fans in whatever direction they pleased, with no consideration for the rotational burden placed on future generations,” said Deputy Energy Secretary Marina Castillo at a press conference. “This common-sense reform ensures our children inherit a planet spinning at appropriate velocity.”

The rule requires all existing ceiling fans to be retrofitted with “unidirectional rotation locks” by 2029, at an estimated cost of $340 per household. Fans caught rotating clockwise will trigger fines starting at $500 for first offenses, escalating to $5,000 for repeat violations.

Hardware stores report runs on ceiling fan direction switches, while several Republican senators have vowed to introduce the “Fan Freedom Act” to overturn the mandate. Senator Mike Hutchins called it “the most absurd executive overreach since the shower head restrictions,” though the White House countered that rotational compliance is “settled science.”

The DOE has allocated $2.3 billion for a public awareness campaign featuring animated videos explaining how clockwise fans “fight against nature.” The agency will also deploy “rotation compliance officers” to conduct random household inspections in 12 pilot cities beginning next spring.

Manufacturers have until March to submit detailed plans showing how they’ll phase out clockwise-capable models, with full compliance required by the 2027 deadline. Home Depot has already begun stocking fans with permanent counterclockwise motors, marketed as “Earth-Friendly Rotation Technology.”
