Schools Require 200 Hours of Digital Wellness Training

The Department of Education announced Friday a comprehensive new initiative requiring all K-12 students to complete a minimum of 200 hours of “Digital Wellness and Screen Time Optimization” training before graduation, effective fall 2027.

The program, developed in partnership with major tech companies and mental health advocacy groups, will teach students the federally approved methods for consuming social media, streaming content, and digital communications. Students will learn proper posture for extended device usage, government-recommended content filtering techniques, and how to fill out mandatory daily “screen time reflection journals.”

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona defended the program during a virtual press conference held via Zoom, explaining that the curriculum addresses a critical gap in modern education. “We can no longer ignore that our children are growing up in a digital world,” Cardona said from his home office, visible iPad and two additional monitors in frame. “It’s our responsibility to ensure they’re consuming content in a healthy, federally compliant manner.”

The 200-hour requirement will be split across all grade levels, with kindergarteners beginning with basic lessons on “Appropriate Emoji Usage in Academic Settings” and high school seniors completing advanced coursework in “Algorithmic Awareness and You.” Students who fail to meet the requirement will not receive their diploma until the hours are completed, even if all other academic requirements have been met.

Parents expressed mixed reactions, with some concerned about adding another graduation requirement while others appreciated the structure. “I’m just glad someone’s finally teaching my kids the right way to look at their phones for eight hours a day,” said one mother from suburban Virginia who requested anonymity.

The Department estimates the program will cost $4.3 billion annually and has already selected several consulting firms to develop the standardized curriculum. Training will begin for teachers this summer, with mandatory 40-hour certification courses to be completed entirely online.
