DOT Mandates Speed Governors to Combat Arrival Privilege

The Department of Transportation announced today that all new vehicles sold in the United States beginning January 1, 2027, must be equipped with federally mandated “Equity Speed Governors” that automatically adjust maximum speed based on the driver’s zip code income level.

Transportation Secretary Miguel Cardona explained that the new regulation addresses “systemic inequalities in transportation velocity” that have allowed wealthier Americans to reach destinations faster than lower-income citizens, creating what he termed “arrival privilege.”

“For too long, we’ve allowed the one percent to literally speed past working families,” Cardona said at a press conference. “A CEO in Greenwich, Connecticut shouldn’t arrive at Whole Foods five minutes before a single mother from New Haven. That’s not the America we want to build.”

Under the new system, vehicles registered to addresses in zip codes with median household incomes above $150,000 will be limited to 45 mph on highways, while those in areas with incomes below $50,000 can travel up to 75 mph. Middle-income zip codes will be capped at 65 mph. The governors use GPS technology and IRS data to make real-time adjustments as drivers cross zip code boundaries.

The regulation includes exceptions for emergency vehicles, government officials, and anyone with an active subscription to three or more streaming services, which the DOT says demonstrates “cultural engagement offsetting economic advantage.”

Major automakers have pledged compliance, with Ford announcing a new “Equity Mode” dashboard display showing drivers how many minutes they’re sacrificing “for justice.” Tesla CEO Elon Musk called the regulation “the dumbest thing since Prohibition” before deleting the post and replacing it with “We support all federal initiatives.”

Republican lawmakers have vowed to challenge the rule, while progressive groups criticized it as “not going far enough,” suggesting wealthy drivers should be required to make scheduled stops to “reflect on their privilege” during long trips.

The regulation takes effect in 167 days.
