WASHINGTON — The Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday the formation of a new interagency task force dedicated to identifying and monitoring Americans who fail to update their opinions after receiving new information.
The “Cognitive Flexibility Compliance Initiative” will utilize social media monitoring, browser history analysis, and voluntary reporting from family members to flag individuals who maintain the same political positions for more than 18 consecutive months.
“Holding consistent beliefs over time is a key indicator of potential extremism,” explained DHS Deputy Secretary Marion Whitfield at a press conference. “Americans who refuse to evolve their thinking in response to expert guidance represent a unique threat to our democratic institutions.”
The program will assign each citizen a “Flexibility Score” ranging from 0 to 100, with points deducted for behaviors such as citing the same constitutional arguments repeatedly, maintaining friendships with people of opposing viewpoints, or expressing skepticism toward newly announced scientific consensus.
Citizens scoring below 40 will be required to attend mandatory “Perspective Recalibration Workshops” where trained facilitators will help them understand why their current opinions may need adjustment. Those who score below 20 may face restrictions on social media posting privileges and be ineligible for certain federal employment opportunities.
“This isn’t about thought control,” Whitfield emphasized. “This is about helping Americans understand that changing your mind frequently is a sign of intelligence and civic responsibility. We’ve identified concerning patterns where some citizens have held the same view on, say, free speech or the Second Amendment for five, ten, even twenty years. That kind of rigidity is dangerous.”
The program will officially launch in January 2027, with voluntary participation encouraged through a new tax credit for citizens who can document at least four major opinion reversals per calendar year.
The White House noted that government officials and members of Congress will be exempt from monitoring, as their position changes are already considered sufficiently adaptive.
