The Department of Energy announced Tuesday that all American households will be required to install government-issued “smart thermostats” by January 2027, with real-time monitoring to ensure compliance with new federal temperature guidelines.
Under the Climate Equity and Comfort Standardization Act, indoor temperatures will be capped at 68°F in winter and must remain above 78°F in summer. The thermostats, manufactured exclusively by a consortium of companies that donated heavily to recent campaigns, will feature tamper-proof casings and direct connectivity to a new DOE enforcement division.
“We can no longer allow the thermostat wars in American homes to contribute to our climate crisis,” said newly appointed Temperature Czar Patricia Woolridge at a press conference. “Every degree of excess heating or cooling is a degree of planetary harm. This is about justice.”
The devices will cost homeowners $340 to install, though low-income households may qualify for a $50 rebate after submitting a 47-page application. Monthly monitoring fees of $12.99 will fund the DOE’s new Thermal Compliance Bureau, which will employ approximately 8,700 federal workers.
Households found tampering with their thermostats face escalating penalties: a written warning for the first offense, a $500 fine for the second, and mandatory enrollment in a weekend “Climate Responsibility Workshop” for the third. Repeat offenders may have their devices upgraded to models that prevent manual override entirely.
“Some will call this overreach,” Woolridge acknowledged. “Those people are welcome to move to Florida, where they’ll learn what real heat feels like.”
The thermostats will also feature a “Patriot Mode” button that citizens can press to temporarily lower temperatures during designated national emergencies, though DOE guidelines note that “individual discomfort does not constitute an emergency.”
Installation begins in Washington D.C. this fall, with bipartisan congressional support after members learned their offices would be exempt from the program due to “essential government function” classifications.
