WASHINGTON — The Department of Energy announced Thursday a sweeping new initiative requiring all American homeowners to register their thermostats with a federal database by January 2027, with penalties including fines up to $5,000 for non-compliance.
The Residential Temperature Accountability and Climate Knowledge Act (R-TRACK) mandates that citizens report their thermostat settings quarterly through a new government portal, ThermostatTracker.gov, currently under development at an estimated cost of $847 million.
“We can no longer allow Americans to heat and cool their homes in the shadows,” said Energy Secretary Patricia Whitmore at a press conference. “Climate change demands transparency. How can we meet our Paris Agreement obligations if we don’t know whether someone in Nebraska is keeping their house at 74 degrees in July?”
Under the program, homeowners will receive a “Thermal Responsibility Score” based on their seasonal temperature choices, geographical location, and home square footage. Scores below 650 may trigger a mandatory energy audit conducted by newly hired DOE Thermal Compliance Officers.
The initiative includes exemptions for senior citizens over 80, individuals with documented medical conditions, and federal employees. Smart thermostat manufacturers have already begun updating their devices to include automatic federal reporting features, with Nest announcing a “patriotic firmware update” scheduled for December.
Opposition has emerged from several quarters. Senator Mike Thornton called the program “an unconscionable invasion of privacy and another example of government overreach into Americans’ daily lives.” The American Civil Liberties Union expressed concerns about the data collection’s Fourth Amendment implications.
The DOE defended the program, noting that thermostat registration is “no different from registering your vehicle” and emphasizing that all data will be “completely secure” on government servers. Officials added that citizens have “nothing to fear if they’re heating responsibly.”
Implementation begins with a voluntary registration period starting next spring, becoming mandatory in January 2027.
