DOT Mandates 15-Minute Meditation Before Driving

The Department of Transportation announced sweeping new regulations Thursday requiring all American drivers to complete a mandatory 15-minute meditation session before starting their vehicles, citing studies that show “uncentered consciousness” contributes to road rage and climate anxiety.

Transportation Secretary James Whitfield unveiled the new “Mindful Mobility Initiative” at a press conference in Washington, explaining that beginning January 1, 2027, all vehicles manufactured or sold in the United States must be equipped with federally approved meditation guidance systems that prevent ignition until the driver completes a full mindfulness cycle.

“We can no longer ignore the connection between inner peace and outer emissions,” Whitfield said, standing before a backdrop featuring lotus flowers and a highway interchange. “A calm driver is a fuel-efficient driver. A centered driver is a safe driver. And frankly, Americans are driving around in a state of spiritual emergency.”

The new systems will use a combination of biometric sensors, voice recognition technology, and what officials are calling “chakra-compliant algorithms” to ensure drivers achieve measurable relaxation before operating their vehicles. Drivers who fail to reach the required “theta wave threshold” will be unable to start their cars and must repeat the meditation session.

Early prototypes of the technology have already been installed in government fleet vehicles. One congressional staffer, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported being stranded in a Capitol Hill parking garage for 47 minutes because the system detected “residual policy frustration” in his breathing patterns.

The regulations include exemptions for emergency vehicles, though paramedics and firefighters must complete an abbreviated 5-minute “rapid centering protocol.” Delivery drivers for major corporations have been granted a temporary waiver until 2028, when they’ll transition to the meditation requirement gradually.

Critics have questioned the $48 billion price tag for retrofitting existing vehicles, but the DOT insists the investment will pay for itself through reduced insurance claims and what Whitfield called “the incalculable value of a more spiritually aligned transportation infrastructure.”
