DOT Requires 15-Min Meditation Before Driving

The Department of Transportation announced sweeping new regulations this morning requiring all American drivers to complete a mandatory 15-minute meditation session before starting their vehicles, effective January 1, 2027.

Transportation Secretary Amanda Chen unveiled the “Mindful Mobility Initiative” at a press conference in Washington, citing studies that show stressed drivers are “up to 3% more likely to experience road rage incidents that could theoretically escalate into situations requiring federal intervention.”

Under the new rules, all vehicles manufactured after 2027 must be equipped with government-certified meditation guidance systems that will prevent ignition until the driver completes a full guided breathing exercise. The system uses facial recognition technology to ensure drivers maintain proper “centering posture” and achieve what the DOT calls “verified calm state compliance.”

Drivers who attempt to skip the meditation or display “resistant facial expressions” during the session will be required to complete an additional 10-minute conflict resolution module before the vehicle will start. Repeat offenders may be enrolled in the department’s new “Roadway Wellness Supervision Program,” which requires weekly virtual check-ins with a federal driving mindfulness coordinator.

The meditation sessions, developed in partnership with several Silicon Valley wellness startups, will feature calming nature sounds and affirmations such as “I am one with the highway” and “My destination will wait for my inner peace.” Drivers can choose from five approved meditation voices, though all have been vetted to ensure “optimal compliance-inducing tonal qualities.”

Emergency vehicles will be exempt from the requirement, though EMTs and firefighters are “strongly encouraged” to practice mindfulness during non-emergency hours. The DOT estimates the program will cost $2.4 billion to implement but insists the investment will pay for itself through “reduced societal tension and improved national cohesion.”

Several automotive manufacturers have already announced they will include premium meditation packages featuring incense diffusers and seat vibration modes synchronized to the breathing exercises.
