WASHINGTON — The Department of Education announced Tuesday that all American high school students will be required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of “climate grief counseling” before receiving their diplomas, effective with the 2027 graduating class.
The new mandate, introduced through an emergency executive directive, establishes federally certified Climate Emotional Wellness Centers in every school district with more than 500 students. Students must attend weekly sessions where trained counselors guide them through the “Five Stages of Planetary Loss” curriculum.
“We’ve noticed that some students are graduating without experiencing adequate anxiety about their future,” explained Deputy Education Secretary Meredith Kowalski at a press conference. “This creates what we call an ‘optimism gap’ that prevents young people from fully engaging with the climate crisis.”
The curriculum includes mandatory journaling exercises where students must write goodbye letters to animals they’ll never see, visualization sessions imagining flooded coastal cities, and group therapy circles focused on processing “carbon guilt.” Students who demonstrate insufficient emotional distress may be required to complete additional remedial sessions.
Schools will receive federal funding of $847 per student for the program, which must be used exclusively for counselor salaries, tissue boxes, and “healing crystals sourced from conflict-free mines.” Any remaining funds may be allocated toward posters featuring melting ice caps with inspirational quotes.
Parents attempting to opt their children out of the program will be required to submit a 35-page waiver form and attend a four-hour informational session titled “Why Your Child’s Feelings About Weather Matter More Than Algebra.” Religious exemptions will not be granted, as the Department has determined that climate grief “transcends denominational boundaries.”
The program has already been piloted in twelve districts, where 89% of participating students reported feeling “significantly more hopeless about the future,” which administrators are calling “a tremendous success metric.”
High schools are encouraged to schedule climate grief sessions during lunch periods or immediately before standardized testing for “maximum emotional impact.”
