Government to Require Weekly Exercise Reports by 2027

WASHINGTON — The Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday that beginning January 1, 2027, all Americans will be required to submit their weekly exercise data to a new federal wellness database or face penalties under the Affordable Movement Act.

The controversial program, which passed Congress last month with a narrow 218-215 vote, mandates that citizens log at least 150 minutes of “moderate physical activity” per week through the new FitGov app or approved third-party fitness trackers. Those who fail to meet the threshold will see a $95 monthly surcharge added to their health insurance premiums.

“We know what’s best for the American people, and frankly, they’re not moving enough,” said HHS Secretary Dr. Patricia Mendez at a press conference. “This isn’t about government overreach. This is about creating a culture of accountability where your neighbors, your employers, and your federal government can all work together to ensure you’re making healthy choices.”

The FitGov app, developed through a $847 million contract with a Silicon Valley startup founded by the Secretary’s former college roommate, will track steps, heart rate, and GPS location data to verify that exercise is actually occurring. The app also features a “Community Wellness Leaderboard” where users can see how their activity stacks up against others in their zip code.

Privacy advocates have raised concerns about the mandatory data sharing, but administration officials insist the information will be “completely secure and only shared with approved government agencies, insurance providers, and select corporate wellness partners.”

Americans who are physically unable to exercise due to disability or medical conditions can apply for a waiver, though they must resubmit documentation quarterly and attend virtual “alternative wellness seminars” covering topics like “mindful breathing” and “visualization exercises for the movement-challenged.”

The program has already inspired similar legislation at the state level, with California considering a bill that would require residents to submit photos of their meals for nutritional review.
