WASHINGTON — The Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday that beginning January 1, 2027, all Americans will be required to submit their weekly grocery receipts to a new federal database designed to calculate individual “nutritional equity scores.”
The Comprehensive Nutrition Accountability and Fairness Act, signed quietly into law last month, establishes a point system wherein citizens earn credits for purchasing approved foods and lose points for items deemed “systemically unhealthy.” Those falling below a threshold score of 650 will receive mandatory counseling sessions via video call with certified government nutritionists.
“For too long, Americans have made food choices in a vacuum, without considering the broader societal implications of their consumption patterns,” said newly appointed Food Equity Czar Dr. Melissa Huang-Peterson at a press conference. “This isn’t about controlling what you eat. It’s about accountability, transparency, and ensuring everyone has equal access to making the right choices.”
The database will track purchases in real-time through integration with grocery store loyalty programs and credit card companies. Items like kale, quinoa, and plant-based proteins will earn positive points, while red meat, full-sugar sodas, and products with “excessive sodium” will result in deductions. Organic purchases receive a 1.5x multiplier.
Critics have raised privacy concerns, but HHS officials insist the data will be “anonymized” and only shared with “relevant federal agencies, approved research institutions, and select public health advocacy organizations.”
Americans who reach a “Gold Status” score of 850 or higher will qualify for a new tax credit of up to $400 annually. Those who remain below 500 for three consecutive months may be flagged for enrollment in the National Dietary Intervention Program, which could include home visits from wellness coordinators.
“Think of it like a credit score, but for your health,” Huang-Peterson explained. “And just like a credit score, improving it is entirely within your control.”
The first receipts are due February 15, 2027.
