The Department of Education announced Monday a groundbreaking new initiative requiring all public school students to begin each day by apologizing to their desks for the carbon emissions created during their commute to school.
The “Morning Accountability Moment,” set to roll out nationwide by January 2027, will have students grades K-12 spend five minutes acknowledging their environmental impact before any instruction begins. Students will face their desks, place both hands on the surface, and recite a scripted apology that includes phrases like “I recognize my presence here has consequences” and “I commit to doing better.”
Education Secretary Patricia Wilmont defended the program during a press conference, explaining that early environmental guilt is “essential for developing climate-conscious citizens.” The department has allocated $847 million to train teachers on proper apology facilitation and to install “Accountability Monitors” in classrooms to ensure students demonstrate appropriate levels of remorse.
Schools will be required to track each student’s “sincerity metrics” using a new federal database. Students who fail to meet the emotional authenticity threshold three times in a semester will be enrolled in mandatory weekend “Climate Reflection Camps” where they’ll learn advanced apology techniques.
The program has drawn criticism from parents who argue their children shouldn’t have to apologize to furniture. Department officials countered that desks are “more than furniture—they’re witnesses to our climate crisis” and that forming emotional bonds with inanimate objects is a crucial step toward planetary healing.
When asked whether students who walk or bike to school would still need to apologize, Wilmont clarified that “existence itself carries a carbon cost” and that no student would be exempt. However, students arriving via electric vehicle may reduce their apology time to four minutes.
The program will be piloted in Seattle, Portland, and Burlington before the national launch.
