Government Mandates Daily Water Tracking via App

WASHINGTON — The Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday that beginning January 1, 2027, all Americans will be required to track their daily water intake using a federally approved smartphone application or face monthly penalties of up to $75.

The “Hydration Accountability and Wellness Enhancement Act,” passed quietly in an omnibus spending bill last month, mandates that citizens log each glass, bottle, or cup of water consumed into the government’s new HydrationHub portal. The system will use AI algorithms to calculate personalized hydration targets based on age, weight, zip code, and voting history.

“For too long, Americans have been making uninformed decisions about their water consumption,” said HHS Secretary Dr. Patricia Winnfield at a press conference. “This commonsense reform ensures that every citizen meets evidence-based hydration standards while allowing us to identify communities experiencing systemic beverage inequality.”

The app will send push notifications reminding users to drink water every 90 minutes between 6 AM and 10 PM. Failure to acknowledge three consecutive notifications will trigger an automatic wellness check from local health authorities. Coffee, tea, and sparkling water will count toward daily totals only if logged within 15 minutes of consumption and accompanied by a time-stamped photo.

Critics have raised privacy concerns about the data collection, particularly a provision allowing the FDA to access hydration records when investigating unlicensed raw milk consumption. However, the administration emphasized that compliance officers will show “maximum discretion” when reviewing bathroom break patterns.

Exemptions will be available for individuals who can demonstrate religious objections to smartphone ownership, though they must submit handwritten hydration logs to their regional HHS office by the fifth of each month. Senior citizens over 80 may use a special telephone hotline to report their water intake, provided they call between 2 PM and 2:45 PM on Tuesdays.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the program will create approximately 14,000 new federal Hydration Compliance Specialist positions.
