The Department of Transportation announced Wednesday a sweeping new initiative requiring all Americans to complete a mandatory 40-hour “Mindful Driving Certification” course before renewing their driver’s licenses, with classes beginning as early as next month.
The program, developed in partnership with several wellness consultants and social-emotional learning organizations, will replace traditional driver’s education with modules focused on “vehicular empathy,” “road rage meditation,” and “deconstructing automotive privilege.”
“For too long, we’ve treated driving as a purely mechanical skill,” said Transportation Secretary Marcus Wellborne at a press conference. “But research shows that 87% of traffic incidents stem from drivers failing to acknowledge the emotional needs of other motorists and pedestrians.”
The curriculum includes a six-hour session on “recognizing your car’s carbon footprint trauma,” four hours dedicated to “apologizing to cyclists through interpretive movement,” and an entire day spent sitting in traffic while practicing gratitude journaling. Participants must also complete a capstone project documenting their “journey from road user to road ally.”
Drivers over 65 will be required to take an additional module called “Unlearning Boomer Merge Patterns,” while pickup truck owners must complete supplemental coursework on “Interrogating Vehicular Masculinity.”
The certification costs $847 per person and must be renewed every two years. Drivers who fail the course three times will have their licenses suspended and be required to attend weekly “Car Culture Recovery” support groups.
Several states have already begun converting DMV locations into “Mobility Healing Centers” equipped with meditation rooms, emotional support vehicles, and safe spaces for people triggered by the sight of parking enforcement.
When asked about Americans in rural areas who depend on their vehicles for work, Secretary Wellborne nodded thoughtfully. “That’s exactly the kind of car-centric thinking we’re trying to heal,” he said.
The program launches October 1st, with non-compliance resulting in a $5,000 fine and mandatory enrollment in a weekend intensive called “Checking Your Driver’s Privilege.”
