DOT to Give Drivers ‘Carbon Scores,’ Mandate Reeducation

The Department of Transportation announced Friday that it will begin issuing “Carbon Impact Scores” for all vehicle owners, with scores below 75 resulting in mandatory enrollment in a six-week “Sustainable Mobility Reeducation Program.”

The new system, set to launch January 2027, will track individual driving habits through existing toll systems, traffic cameras, and voluntary smartphone data sharing. Each trip will be assigned a carbon value based on distance, vehicle type, time of day, and whether the destination could have been reached “through alternative low-impact methods such as bicycling or community carpooling.”

Transportation Secretary Amanda Chen defended the program at a press conference, explaining that the reeducation courses are “not punitive, but educational opportunities for Americans to understand the collective impact of their mobility choices.”

The mandatory six-week program includes three-hour evening sessions covering topics such as “Deconstructing Car Culture: A Historical Perspective on Automotive Privilege,” “Public Transit as Self-Care,” and “Learning to Love the 15-Minute City.” Participants will also complete a final project demonstrating how they plan to reduce their carbon score by at least 30 points within 90 days.

Citizens who fail to attend all sessions or whose scores don’t improve will face escalating consequences, starting with a $500 monthly surcharge on vehicle registration, progressing to restricted driving hours, and culminating in temporary license suspension for repeat offenders.

The program includes exemptions for emergency services, politicians with security details, and residents of “designated rural hardship zones,” though applicants must prove they live more than eight miles from the nearest bus stop.

Early modeling suggests approximately 40% of American drivers will qualify for reeducation in the program’s first year. The DOT has already contracted with 2,400 certified “Mobility Justice Educators” to teach the courses, at a projected cost of $8.7 billion annually.

“We’re not taking away anyone’s freedom,” Secretary Chen emphasized. “We’re simply helping Americans make better choices for the planet.”
