WASHINGTON — The Department of Energy announced Tuesday that effective January 1, 2027, all American homeowners will be required to register their refrigerators with a new federal database designed to monitor “cooling equity” across demographic groups.
The National Refrigeration Registry, created under the Appliance Justice and Climate Fairness Act, will require citizens to submit quarterly reports detailing their refrigerator’s energy consumption, internal temperature settings, and a complete inventory of contents organized by food group.
“For too long, refrigerator ownership and cooling capacity has been distributed unfairly across income levels,” said newly appointed Refrigeration Equity Czar Patricia Hollings during a press conference. “Some Americans have Sub-Zero units with dedicated cheese drawers while others make do with compact models. This is unacceptable in a just society.”
Under the new regulations, households with refrigerators exceeding 25 cubic feet of storage capacity will face an annual “Cold Privilege Tax” of $347. Families with multiple refrigerators, including garage units, will be subject to additional penalties and mandatory energy audits.
The registry will also track “food hoarding behavior,” with algorithms flagging households that maintain more than a two-week supply of perishables. Offenders may be required to attend refrigerator counseling sessions or donate excess food storage capacity to a newly created federal food redistribution program.
To ensure compliance, the DOE will deploy 3,500 new Refrigeration Compliance Officers empowered to conduct surprise inspections. Homeowners who fail to register face fines up to $5,000 and potential refrigerator confiscation.
“This is about fairness and sustainability,” Hollings explained. “Why does one family need 32 cubic feet when another makes do with 18? The math doesn’t add up, and frankly, it’s selfish.”
The American Refrigeration Manufacturers Association declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation. Several Republican governors have already announced they will refuse to enforce the registry in their states.
Registration is expected to open online this fall, though the website has already experienced technical difficulties during beta testing.
