WASHINGTON — The Department of Energy announced Friday that all American households will be required to register their home thermostats with a new federal database by January 2027, with penalties including fines up to $5,000 for noncompliance.
The National Thermal Equity and Monitoring System (N-TEMPS) will collect real-time data on heating and cooling patterns to ensure Americans are “doing their part” to combat climate change, according to Energy Secretary Amanda Chen.
“For too long, we’ve relied on voluntary participation in energy conservation,” Chen said at a press conference. “The science is clear: we can no longer allow individual households to unilaterally decide their own comfort levels when the planet is at stake.”
Under the new regulations, thermostats in winter months must not exceed 64 degrees Fahrenheit, while summer cooling cannot drop below 78 degrees. The system will also track “thermal equity” across neighborhoods to identify communities that may be overcooling or overheating relative to federal guidelines.
Smart thermostats will be required for all homes by 2028, with the government offering a $50 rebate toward federally approved models that range from $400 to $800. Homes with older manual thermostats will need to schedule compliance inspections with newly hired DOE Thermal Enforcement Officers.
“We understand this may cause some discomfort initially,” Chen acknowledged. “But Americans have always risen to meet great challenges. We survived the Revolutionary War without air conditioning. We can survive August in Arizona at 78 degrees.”
The program includes exemptions for households with documented medical conditions, though applicants must provide physician authorization and submit to quarterly re-verification. Initial reports suggest the application process currently takes 8-12 weeks.
Republican lawmakers immediately condemned the move as government overreach. The White House responded that “personal thermostat freedom” is not explicitly protected by the Constitution and that interstate temperature differences affect the national power grid, justifying federal intervention under the Commerce Clause.
The DOE estimates the program will reduce national energy consumption by 3% while creating approximately 12,000 new federal jobs in thermal compliance monitoring.
