WASHINGTON — The Department of Energy announced Tuesday that all residential thermostats will be replaced with federally approved “Climate Justice Units” by January 2027, with homeowners required to submit monthly “thermal equity reports” demonstrating they are not using disproportionate heating or cooling compared to their neighbors.
Under the new Home Temperature Fairness Act, passed quietly in last month’s 3,000-page infrastructure bill, the DOE will install smart thermostats in every American home at no cost to homeowners. The devices will be monitored remotely to ensure compliance with new “neighborhood temperature averaging” requirements.
“We’ve identified heating and cooling as a major source of environmental inequality,” explained DOE Secretary Patricia Whitmore at a press conference. “Why should one family enjoy 72 degrees while their neighbor sweats at 68? These new units will automatically adjust your home temperature based on your block’s collective climate impact score.”
The thermostats will feature a patented “Solidarity Mode” that prevents homeowners from setting temperatures more than three degrees different from their neighborhood median. Households that repeatedly attempt to override the system will face escalating penalties, beginning with warning letters and progressing to mandatory attendance at four-hour “Thermal Privilege Awareness” seminars.
Installation teams will begin in coastal urban areas before expanding nationwide. Homeowners must provide access to installers or face fines up to $500 per day. The units cannot be removed or tampered with, as they are now classified as “critical climate infrastructure.”
Energy Secretary Whitmore dismissed concerns about government overreach. “This is about fairness. If your elderly neighbor can’t afford to run their AC in summer, why should you be comfortable? We’re building a more equitable thermal future for everyone.”
The thermostats will also feature a helpful “Shame Display” showing how much more energy your household uses compared to your street average, visible to anyone who walks past your home.
