WASHINGTON — The Department of Education announced Thursday that all public school students will be required to complete a new mandatory course titled “Understanding Why Your Parents Are Wrong” beginning in the 2027-2028 academic year.
The 16-week curriculum, developed in partnership with several progressive think tanks and a coalition of concerned educators, will teach students critical thinking skills by systematically deconstructing commonly held beliefs their parents may have shared at the dinner table.
“We’ve noticed a disturbing trend of children going home and being exposed to unapproved narratives,” said Deputy Education Secretary Marina Whitfield at a press conference. “This course will give students the tools they need to identify when their parents are trafficking in misinformation, and more importantly, how to correct them.”
The course syllabus includes units on “Why Your Dad’s Opinions About Gas Prices Are Actually Racist,” “Understanding That Your Mom’s Concerns About Crime Statistics Come From a Place of Privilege,” and a final project requiring students to film themselves fact-checking their parents during family meals.
Parents will be required to sign a waiver acknowledging that their children may return from school with a “more evolved understanding of reality” and that any attempts to contradict the curriculum at home could result in a referral to local social services for educational neglect.
School districts in several blue states have already begun pilot programs. In Montgomery County, Maryland, 12-year-old Jeremy Patterson reportedly earned extra credit by submitting a 47-page dossier documenting his father’s “problematic” viewing habits, complete with screenshots and timestamps.
“The future of democracy depends on making sure the next generation understands that their parents’ lived experiences are less valid than what experts tell them,” Whitfield added. “We’re very excited about the possibilities.”
The Department noted that parents who wish to opt their children out of the course may do so by completing a 186-page exemption form and attending a mandatory 8-hour seminar on “Examining Your Resistance to Progress.”
