Feds Mandate Registration for Road Trips Over 50 Miles

WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation announced Thursday a comprehensive new initiative requiring all Americans to submit a formal travel itinerary to federal authorities at least 72 hours before any trip exceeding 50 miles from their primary residence.

The “Safe and Accountable Travel Registry Act” (SATRA), which takes effect January 1, 2027, aims to “modernize transportation oversight” and “ensure equitable road usage” according to Transportation Secretary Angela Whitmore.

“For too long, Americans have operated under the assumption that they can simply get in their vehicles and drive wherever they want, whenever they want,” Whitmore said at a press conference. “This Wild West approach to mobility is not only inefficient, it’s fundamentally unfair to communities experiencing unexpected traffic from out-of-town visitors.”

Under the new regulations, citizens must log into the federal TravelSafe portal and provide detailed information including destination, purpose of travel, estimated fuel consumption, and whether the trip could be “reasonably avoided through remote participation.” Applications will be processed within 48 hours, with approvals sent via text message.

Certain trips will require additional documentation. Travel to visit family members will need proof of relationship. Vacation travel must include a 500-word essay explaining why the destination cannot be experienced “through virtual reality or streaming services.” Anyone traveling to a second home must submit a climate impact statement.

The DOT emphasized that emergency travel exemptions will be available, though citizens must still file within 24 hours after the emergency “for data collection purposes.” Failure to register a qualifying trip will result in a $500 fine for first-time offenders, escalating to $2,500 and potential vehicle immobilization for repeat violations.

“We’re simply asking Americans to be more thoughtful about their movements,” Whitmore added. “Is this trip truly necessary? Could you Zoom instead? These are questions every responsible citizen should be asking.”

The portal is expected to process approximately 400 million travel requests annually.
