WASHINGTON — The Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday the launch of a comprehensive nationwide initiative requiring all Americans to register their social media accounts with a newly created Federal Bureau of Online Authenticity (FBOA) by December 31st or face restrictions on interstate travel.
The program, dubbed “Digital Identity Verification for American Safety” (DIVAS), mandates that citizens provide login credentials for all platforms including Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and even dating apps to ensure “continuity of identity across physical and digital spaces.”
“We’ve noticed a disturbing trend of Americans presenting differently online than they do in person,” explained FBOA Director Patricia Wenworth at a press conference. “Someone might be very polite at the DMV but then post sarcastic comments on Twitter. This fragmentation of identity poses a national security risk we can no longer ignore.”
Under the new regulations, citizens who fail to register will receive a “Digital Non-Compliance” notation on their driver’s licenses, which will trigger additional screening at airports, train stations, and state borders. The TSA has already begun installing “Authentication Verification Lanes” at major airports.
Civil liberties groups have raised concerns, but Secretary of Homeland Security Andrew Kaufman dismissed them as “outdated thinking from the pre-digital era.” He emphasized that the government would only access accounts “when necessary for verification purposes, public safety assessments, or routine compliance audits.”
The FBOA will employ approximately 47,000 new federal workers to monitor registered accounts and ensure users maintain consistent personas across platforms. Early trials in three pilot cities showed a 12% reduction in “attitude discrepancies” between online and offline behavior.
Registration kiosks are expected to appear in post offices nationwide by September. Citizens will need to bring two forms of ID, their phone, and be prepared to log into each account in front of a federal agent to complete the verification process.
