Judge Blocks Trump Ban on AI Firm

A federal judge ruled Thursday that the Trump administration illegally banned a major AI company from military contracts after it refused to let the Pentagon use its technology for mass surveillance and autonomous killing.

U.S. District Judge Rita Lin found President Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth retaliated against Anthropic for criticizing the administration’s demands. The company had declined to remove safety restrictions on its Claude chatbot that prevent use in lethal autonomous warfare and domestic spying operations.

“The empty invocation of national security is not a blank check to punish and retaliate against government critics,” Lin wrote in her decision striking down the ban.

Pentagon Wanted Total Access to AI System

The dispute began during months of closed-door negotiations between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Pentagon officials over a new defense contract. The Department of Defense wanted Anthropic to drop all usage restrictions on Claude, its flagship AI chatbot.

When Anthropic refused, the administration declared the company a “supply chain risk to national security” and banned federal agencies from using its products. President Trump publicly called Anthropic executives “leftwing nut jobs” for their stance.

Judge Lin, a Biden appointee, found the government’s own statements proved the ban was designed to make a public example of the company rather than address genuine security concerns. Officials’ internal communications showed the designation was punitive, not protective.

What the Ruling Changes

The decision immediately lifts restrictions preventing military and intelligence agencies from using Anthropic’s technology. Federal contractors who had dropped Anthropic products to comply with the ban can now resume use.

The ruling sets a precedent limiting how administrations can wield national security designations against private companies. Legal experts say it reinforces that agencies cannot use security classifications to silence corporate dissent or punish business decisions they dislike.

The Justice Department has not announced whether it will appeal. Anthropic declined to comment on the ruling but its stock rose 7% in after-hours trading.

The case highlights broader tensions as the Pentagon pushes AI companies to remove ethical safeguards that limit military applications. Several major tech firms now face similar pressure to choose between lucrative defense contracts and their own usage policies.
