DOE Requires Federal Registration for Refrigerators

The Department of Energy announced Friday a sweeping new initiative requiring all American households to register their refrigerators with a federal database by March 2027, citing concerns over “unmonitored food storage practices” and their impact on the national grid.

Under the Refrigerated Asset Tracking and Safety Act (RATS), homeowners will be required to submit quarterly reports detailing their refrigerator’s energy consumption, internal temperature settings, and a complete inventory of stored items. Failure to comply will result in fines starting at $500 per violation.

“For too long, Americans have operated refrigerators with zero federal oversight,” said Deputy Energy Secretary Marcus Chen at a press conference. “We have no idea what temperatures people are keeping their milk at, whether they’re properly rotating their produce, or if they’re running empty fridges in their garages. This represents a massive knowledge gap in our energy infrastructure.”

The new regulations will also prohibit refrigerators older than 15 years from being operated without a special waiver, which requires a home inspection and mandatory upgrade consultation. Second refrigerators in garages or basements will be subject to an additional annual registration fee of $200, with exemptions only for households demonstrating “legitimate need” for extra cold storage capacity.

Smart refrigerators that automatically report usage data to the DOE will receive a $100 tax credit, while households that install federally approved temperature monitoring devices will be eligible for priority placement on the “Responsible Cooling” registry.

When pressed about privacy concerns, Chen emphasized that the data would be “completely secure” and used solely for “energy optimization purposes and occasional food safety compliance checks.”

The American Refrigeration Freedom Coalition has already filed a lawsuit, but the DOE maintains that refrigerator registration falls under existing interstate commerce powers, as most refrigerators contain food that has crossed state lines at some point.
