A Florida man will spend the rest of his life in prison for strangling and beating his girlfriend’s 93-year-old mother to death in her bed, days after she celebrated her birthday with family.
Javier Rosado Martinez, 58, was convicted of first-degree murder in the March 13, 2022, killing of Dolores Padilla-Marrero at her senior living facility in Orlando. A judge sentenced him Tuesday to life without parole.
Murder After Birthday Celebration
Padilla-Marrero had recently marked her 93rd birthday surrounded by loved ones when Martinez attacked her in her own bed. The elderly woman was strangled and beaten to death in what prosecutors described as a brutal assault against a defenseless victim.
Martinez was dating Padilla-Marrero’s daughter at the time of the murder. The relationship between the suspect and victim’s family gave him access to the senior living facility on Alafaya Trail where the killing occurred.
Life Sentence Imposed
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, leading to Martinez’s arrest and eventual conviction on the first-degree murder charge. Florida law mandates life without parole for first-degree murder convictions, giving the judge no discretion in sentencing.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about elder safety, particularly in residential facilities where victims may be vulnerable to violence from those they know. According to national data, family members or acquaintances commit the vast majority of crimes against elderly victims.
