A New Jersey man faces murder charges after allegedly setting fire to a home and killing a woman inside—hours after she rejected his romantic advances, police say.
Prosecutors in Burlington County charged 52-year-old Richard Zimmerman with murder, arson, and aggravated assault following the deadly fire that claimed the life of 46-year-old Tara Serpe in Edgewater Park on May 6. Investigators say Zimmerman deliberately ignited the blaze at approximately 2:30 a.m. after Serpe turned down his romantic overtures earlier that evening.
According to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, Zimmerman had been socializing with Serpe and others at the residence before the fire. When his advances were rebuffed, he allegedly left the home, returned with gasoline, and set the structure ablaze while people were still inside.
Emergency responders pulled Serpe from the burning home and transported her to a nearby hospital, where she died from her injuries. At least one other person escaped the fire. The severity of Serpe’s burns and smoke inhalation proved fatal despite emergency medical intervention.
Police arrested Zimmerman the same day. During questioning, investigators informed him that an occupant had died in the fire. “Zimmerman was informed that an occupant of the residence died as a result of the fire and he had a strong emotional response to this,” authorities said in court documents, though they did not elaborate on the nature of that response.
The case illustrates the extreme violence some men inflict when women decline their attention—a reality that leaves families shattered and communities searching for answers. Serpe’s death adds to a grim national pattern: federal data shows intimate partner violence accounts for roughly 1,500 homicides annually in the United States, with rejection serving as a common trigger.
Zimmerman remains held in Burlington County jail pending trial. If convicted of murder, he faces life in prison. Prosecutors have not yet indicated whether they will seek enhanced penalties given the particularly brutal nature of the killing.
The fire destroyed the Edgewater Park home. Local fire marshals continue investigating the extent of the structural damage and whether accelerants were used beyond gasoline.
Authorities have not disclosed whether Zimmerman and Serpe knew each other prior to that evening or how long he had been at the residence before the rejection occurred. The investigation remains active as prosecutors build their case for trial.
