WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation announced Tuesday a sweeping new federal mandate requiring all Americans to remove their “I Did That” Biden gas pump stickers by October 1st or face civil penalties of up to $500 per sticker.
The ruling, which DOT Secretary Margaret Chen called “a necessary step to preserve public infrastructure,” classifies the stickers as unauthorized modifications to federally regulated fuel dispensing equipment. Gas station owners will be required to submit monthly compliance reports documenting sticker removal efforts.
“These adhesive materials interfere with the intended aesthetic presentation of our nation’s refueling stations,” Chen said at a press conference. “More importantly, they create confusion about who is actually responsible for gas prices, which as we all know, is a complex interplay of global market forces, OPEC decisions, and corporate greed — not any individual elected official.”
The new enforcement mechanism includes a federal hotline (1-800-NO-STICK) where citizens can report stickers they observe in their communities. Reports will be forwarded to local authorities, who must investigate within 72 hours.
Gas station owners expressed concern about the compliance costs. “They want me to hire someone to scrape stickers for eight hours a day,” said Mark Stevens, who operates three Shell stations in Ohio. “I pointed out that people will just put new ones up, and they told me that’s why the reporting system is so important.”
The DOT has allocated $43 million for a “Sticker Awareness Campaign” featuring PSA spots explaining why the stickers constitute vandalism. An additional $12 million will fund development of a mobile app allowing real-time sticker reporting with GPS coordinates.
When asked if similar enforcement would apply to political bumper stickers, Chen clarified that those remain protected speech, as they’re affixed to private property rather than “semi-public energy distribution infrastructure.”
The rule takes effect in 30 days.
