The Department of Education announced Thursday a sweeping new initiative requiring all K-12 students to complete a mandatory “Screen Time Equity Assessment” before being allowed to graduate high school.
Under the new federal guidelines, students will be required to document and submit their daily social media usage, streaming hours, and video game time to ensure they meet minimum digital engagement standards. Students falling below the threshold of 6 hours per day of screen time will be enrolled in remedial “Device Immersion” programs.
“We’ve identified a troubling achievement gap,” said Deputy Secretary of Digital Literacy Marcus Chen at a press conference. “Some students are spending time outdoors, reading physical books, or engaging in face-to-face conversations. This creates an unfair advantage for children whose parents limit screen access.”
The program will assign each student a “Digital Equity Score” based on their consumption across approved platforms including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Netflix. Students who score in the bottom quartile will receive a government-issued iPad with pre-loaded content and mandatory 90-minute after-school “catch-up sessions.”
Parent advocacy groups have raised concerns about the program, but Department officials insist the data shows clear correlation between screen time and preparedness for the modern economy. “Every job requires staring at screens,” Chen explained. “We’re simply ensuring no child is left behind in the digital age.”
Schools will begin collecting baseline data this fall, with full implementation by the 2027 academic year. The program includes $4.8 billion in federal funding for “Screen Time Coaches” who will monitor student compliance and work with families to develop individualized digital consumption plans.
Students caught reading books during lunch or playing outside during recess will receive warning notices sent home to parents. Repeat offenders may be required to attend summer “Digital Immersion Boot Camps.”
The Department emphasized that all student data will be securely stored and shared only with approved technology partners and social media companies for “educational purposes.”
